Congenital high airway obstructive syndrome (CHAOS) is a rare but fatal disease.

Laryngeal cyst

It is characterized by complete or near-complete developmental obstruction of the fetal airway.

Causes of CHAOS include laryngeal atresia, laryngeal or subglottic stenosis, webs, laryngeal cysts and tracheal atresia or stenosis.

Laryngomucocoele is a rare cause of airways obstruction in the neonatal period.

Many fetuses with CHAOS have other associated congenital abnormalities.

Pleural and pericardial effusions and subcutaneous oedema, are seen in CHAOS antenatally.

It is difficult to distinguish pathological features of hydrops from normal postmortem MRI findings.
