Second-opinion diagnosis on pathology slides is an accepted practice before definitive treatment is considered for patients. Many studies have reported the beneficial effect of second opinions in diagnostic pathology.

Second opinion in surgical pathology usually involves a single organ system which is reviewed by expert pathologists. It has been noted that when skin biopsies reported by general pathologists, are reviewed by a dermatopathologist there is a high probability of a change in diagnosis.

In many laboratories, some cases are reviewed routinely by a second pathologist within the same department before it is signed out. Review of slides by a second pathologist before sign out is associated with a lower error rate.

If a patient wants to independently get the slides reviewed they should consult the physician or the first pathologist who originally reported the case. They will always help the patient by referring them to an experienced surgical pathologist with expertise in a specialized area.
