Today is the first day of 2015. I dedicate this post to two great pioneers of Modern India Shri Ramkrishna Paramhansa and Swami Vivekananda.

The synthesis of the two great forces, the ancient Indian and the modern Western, was brought about Ramakrishna Paramhansa (1836-1886) and by his disciple, Vivekananda (1863-1902).

Ramakrishna believed in the inherent truth and unity of all religions.

Swami Vivekananda advocated a vigorous active life and believed that the Hindu Vedantic doctrine had a message not only for India, but the whole world.

At the same time he urged Indians to adopt the scientific attitude of the West.

These are some inspiring quotations of the two great educational, religious and social leaders of Modern India.

Only two kinds of people can attain self-knowledge: those who are not encumbered at all with learning, that is to say, whose minds are not over-crowded with thoughts borrowed from others; and those who, after studying all the scriptures and sciences, have come to realise that they know nothing.

The physicians of one class feel the patients and go away, merely prescribing medicine.

As they leave the room they simply ask the patient to take the medicine.

They are the poorest class of physicians.

Disease is the tax which the soul pays for the body, as the tenant pays house-rent for the use of the house.

Many good sayings are to be found in holy books, but merely reading them will not make one religious.

As long as I live, so long do I learn.

The world is indeed a mixture of truth and make-believe.

Discard the make-believe and take the truth.

Bondage and Liberation are of the mind alone.

God is in all men, but all men are not in God; that is why we suffer.

The Man who works for others, without any selfish motive, really does good to himself.

God is everywhere but He is most manifest in man. So serve man as God. That is as good as worshipping God.

The winds of God's grace are always blowing, it is for us to raise our sails.

Arise, awake, stop not until your goal is achieved.

Great work requires great and persistent effort for a long time. … Character has to be established through a thousand stumbles.

Each work has to pass through these stages—ridicule, opposition, and then acceptance.

Those who think ahead of their time are sure to be misunderstood.

Women will work out their destinies - much better, too, than men can ever do for them.

All the mischief to women has come because men undertook to shape the destiny of women.

I, for one, thoroughly believe that no power in the universe can withhold from anyone anything they really deserve.

Knowledge can only be got in one way, the way of experience; there is no other way to know.

Fill the brain with high thoughts, highest ideals, place them day and night before you, and out of that will come great work.

The brain and muscles must develop simultaneously.

Iron nerves with an intelligent brain — and the whole world is at your feet.

All truth is eternal. Truth is nobody’s property; no race, no individual can lay any exclusive claim to it. Truth is the nature of all souls.

Condemn none: if you can stretch out a helping hand, do so.

If not, fold your hands, bless your brothers, and let them go their own way.

Watch people do their most common actions; these are indeed the things that will tell you the real character of a great person.

The great secret of true success, of true happiness, is this: the man or woman who asks for no return, the perfectly unselfish person, is the most successful.

Truth can be stated in a thousand different ways, yet each one can be true.

If faith in ourselves had been more extensively taught and practiced, I am sure a very large portion of the evils and miseries that we have would have vanished.

Fear is death, fear is sin, fear is hell, fear is unrighteousness, and fear is wrong life.

All the negative thoughts and ideas that are in the world have proceeded from this evil spirit of fear.
