Systemic Pathology (Autopsy) Quiz Case 1

Dr Sampurna Roy MD

      3

Autopsy specimen of the heart from a 45 year old healthy male who enjoyed sports.

The heart weighed 650 gms (normal weight 275-375gms).

There was severe hypertrophy of left ventricle.

Post mortem examination revealed that the patient had congestive cardiac failure.

The mitral root was dilated leading to mitral regurgitation.

There was no other significant mitral valve pathology.

The patient had a sudden cardiac death due to ventricular fibrillation.

1) Cross section through the ventricles

2) Low power section of the myocardium

3) High power section of myocardium

4) Normal section of the myocardium from a different case. I have placed the normal section so that you can compare the appearance of the diseased myocardium (sections 2 and 3) and make the final diagnosis.

                                            Final Diagnosis
